Although the Victoria era is often viewed, quite rightly, as a time of great poverty for the masses, one could argue that it did the world of good for Sussex along with other parts of the country.
Funded by the success of the Industrial Revolution and the Reforms of the 1830’s a mark will have been made on every single village and town for the better.
It brought the introduction of the railway line, schools and post offices. Many hard paved road surfaces were laid, cast iron pumps for water replaced wells. Tolls on most roads were abolished, beautiful Gothic Church spires on churches were built.
Some of our tiny fishing villages became thriving ports, piers were built. The new railway lines enabled the coastal towns to grow and flourish and of course, Sussex was made that much closer to London.
